Highlanders 2010

The Highlanders squad for the 2010 Rebel Sport Super 14 as announced today reflects both the gradual building process undertaken in the past two years and the success of Southland in winning the Ranfurly Shield and making the semifinals of the Air New Zealand Cup.

Highlanders coach Glenn Moore said both elements should combine to ensure a successful campaign by the squad.

“A key component is consistency of selection and we’re delighted that we have been able to retain many of the players we have been working with for the past two years,” Moore said. “As a coach, I know how frustrating it can be to start with an entirely new squad at the beginning of a competition – we have been spared that and we are now entering the phase in which we can capitalise on the work of the past two years. We are seeing the benefits of everyone’s work with the inclusion of our new All Blacks, especially Ben Smith.”

Moore said Southland’s success in 2009 was gratifying to the Highlanders region as a whole. “Their progress has strengthened Highlanders rugby so there are both personal benefits to the players who have earned selection and wider benefits to rugby as a whole in the south.”

No Noakes. They bought that Paterson fella in. Bad call.

No Scott Cowan, but Romans is there. Bad call.

Apparently performance on the field doesn't really count for much.

Breakdown by Province:
Otago - 10
Southland - 10
Hawkes Bay - 4
Canterbury - 2
Taranaki - 1
Northland - 1

I would've expected one or two more Southlanders considering the form show in the ANZ Cup for the second year in a row.

I heard your heart break from here! :D

I thought that they said on the news there were quite a few southand players in all the NZ teams.  Are there some in the other teams then?
